How to Wash Cotton Slips So They Last for Years

Cotton slips last for years on three rules: wash after every wear in warm months, use cold water with a mild detergent, and dry in sunlight, which is the natural whitener. Skip fabric softener and hot water. That is the entire routine, and the rest of this guide explains the why, plus the fix for slips that have already yellowed.

A slip works harder than anything else in your wardrobe except innerwear. It sits against your skin all day, takes the sweat your kurta would otherwise absorb, and goes through the wash more than the garments above it. Cared for casually, cotton handles this for years. Cared for wrongly, even good cotton yellows and sags inside one summer. The difference is three habits.

The routine, step by step

  1. Wash after each wear in summer, every second wear in winter. The slip’s job is absorbing sweat, and sweat left in cotton is what becomes permanent yellowing. Frequency is the single biggest factor in how a slip ages.
  2. Use cold or room temperature water. Hot water sets sweat stains, shrinks cotton over time, and tires elastic. Cold water cleans voile completely with a normal detergent dose.
  3. Use a mild detergent, skip the softener. Fabric softener coats cotton fibres with a waxy film that reduces the absorbency you bought cotton for. A slip that has stopped absorbing sweat is a slip that has stopped working, even though it looks fine.
  4. Machine wash is fine, gentle cycle is kind. Our voile slips are built for machine washing. A gentle cycle and a lingerie bag add years if you remember, but a normal cycle does no drama. What matters more is what comes next.
  5. Dry in sunlight. Sun is the free whitener. An hour of direct Indian sun does what bleach does, without the fibre damage bleach causes. Hang slips in full sun, not in the bathroom, and whites stay white years longer.
  6. Iron rarely, low, or never. Voile worn under another garment does not need pressing. If folding creases bother you, a low iron while slightly damp settles them.

The yellowing problem, explained and fixed

Yellowing on slips and innerwear is sweat and body oil oxidising inside the fibre. It builds where contact is constant, the underarms, the back, the chest line. Once oxidised it laughs at normal detergent, which is why a yellowed slip comes out of the wash looking exactly as it went in.

The fix that works: dissolve two spoons of washing soda or an oxygen based whitener in a bucket of cool water, soak the slip for two to three hours, then wash normally and dry in full sun. Repeat once if needed. Chlorine bleach also whitens but weakens cotton with every use and yellows polyester trims, so keep it as the last resort.

The prevention that works better: wash promptly. Sweat rinsed out the same day never gets to oxidise. This is the whole argument for the wash after wear rule, and it is also why a slip rotation helps. Two or three slips alternating means each one is washed fresh and none marinates in the laundry basket through a humid week.

Elastic and straps

The elastic in straps dies from heat, not from use. Hot water washes, dryers, and ironing over the elastic are the three killers. Keep all three away and the straps on a cotton slip outlive the fabric around them. Adjustable straps on dress slips have metal sliders, worth hooking before machine washing so they do not snag the voile, the same logic that pairs cotton with cotton in our fabric comparison.

Storage that does not undo the washing

Fold slips into the same drawer as your innerwear, not on hangers. Hanging stretches the shoulder line of light voile over months. Make sure they go in fully dry; cotton folded damp in an Indian monsoon learns mildew quickly. A drawer sachet of neem leaves or a cedar block keeps the drawer fresh the old way, which works as well as it ever did.

When to replace a slip

A cotton slip retires when the fabric thins enough to lose opacity, when yellowing survives the soak treatment, or when the elastic gives. With this routine that takes years of regular wear. At 460 rupees, replacing one is painless, but the point of the routine is how rarely you do it. The same habits, incidentally, serve every cotton piece you own, from kurtas outward.

A note from our team in Jaipur. We pre wash our voile before stitching, so the shrink is taken out before the slip reaches you and the fit you receive is the fit that stays. What we cannot pre do is the sun drying, and it is the step customers skip most. If you take one habit from this page, take that one. In this country the best laundry chemical is free and overhead for most of the year.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash a cotton slip?

After every wear in warm months, since the slip absorbs a full day of sweat. In winter, every second wear is fine. Prompt washing is what prevents permanent yellowing.

Why do my slips turn yellow at the underarms?

Sweat and body oil oxidising inside the cotton. Normal detergent cannot remove it once set. Prevent it by washing promptly, and treat existing stains with an oxygen whitener soak followed by sun drying.

Can I machine wash cotton slips?

Yes. Cold water, mild detergent, gentle cycle if available. Cotton voile is woven to handle machine washing; the things that damage slips are heat and softener, not the machine.

Does fabric softener damage cotton slips?

It coats the fibres and reduces absorbency, which is the property a cotton slip exists for. Skip it. Sun dried voile comes out soft without help.

How do I whiten innerwear without bleach?

Soak in cool water with washing soda or an oxygen based whitener for two to three hours, wash normally, dry in direct sun. Sunlight continues the whitening every time you dry.

How long should a cotton slip last?

Several years of regular rotation with cold washing and sun drying. Replace it when the fabric thins, the yellowing resists treatment, or the elastic gives.

Three habits, years of wear

Cold water, prompt washing, sunshine. The slip that protects your clothes deserves the fifteen seconds of care that keeps it protecting them. New to the garment? Start with what a cotton slip is, or the full layering guide.
