Slip Lengths Explained: Which Length for Which Outfit

The rule for slip length is simple: the slip must end above your garment’s hem and below the zone that daylight makes sheer, which is the thigh. Knee length, around 38 inches from the shoulder, satisfies both conditions for almost every kurta, midi and maxi in an Indian wardrobe, which is why it is the standard.

Length is the least discussed slip measurement and the only one that can publicly fail. A slip the wrong colour shows subtly. A slip the wrong length shows absolutely, as a separate hem hanging below your dress in the office corridor. One chart and one rule prevent it forever.

The two boundary rule

Every slip length decision sits between two boundaries.

The lower boundary: the slip must end above the outer garment’s hem, with a margin of at least two inches so that sitting, walking and stairs never push it into view.

The upper boundary: the slip must cover the thigh, because the thigh is where backlight reads through thin fabric. A slip that ends mid thigh leaves the most revealing zone half covered, which defeats the garment.

Knee length threads both boundaries under most Indian silhouettes. The exceptions, short kurtis and above knee dresses, are exactly the cases in the chart below.

The length chart

Your garment Garment length Slip length that works
Regular kurta Knee to mid calf Knee length, 38 inches
Long kurta or anarkali Mid calf to ankle Knee length, 38 inches
Suit set kurta Knee or below Knee length, 38 inches
Midi dress Below knee Knee length, 38 inches
Maxi dress Ankle Knee length, 38 inches
Short kurti Hip to mid thigh No slip fits, use a camisole and opaque bottoms
Above knee dress Above knee Short slip if lined options fail, or pick lined dresses

The chart says the quiet truth out loud: one knee length slip covers an entire Indian wardrobe except the shortest garments, where the answer is not a shorter slip so much as a different strategy.

Why longer is not safer

A natural instinct says a calf length slip under a long anarkali gives more coverage. In practice extra length adds three problems and zero coverage that matters. The longer slip catches between your legs as you walk, shows the moment a side slit opens past the knee, and adds fabric weight exactly where summer wants none. Sheerness lives on the thigh, and the knee length slip already owns that zone. Below the knee, your legs are simply legs, and daylight through fabric reads as silhouette, not exposure.

The side slit point matters most with kurtas. Kurta slits typically open to just above the knee, and a 38 inch slip with matching side slits stays inside that line through a full stride. A longer slip without slits turns every step into a fabric negotiation.

Measuring before you buy

Slip length is measured from the shoulder seam to the hem. To check it against your wardrobe, take your shortest regular garment, measure it shoulder to hem, and subtract two inches. If the result is 38 or more, the standard knee length slip disappears under everything you own. Our size chart lists the exact measurements per size, worth the two minutes since slips are non returnable for hygiene reasons.

Height changes the arithmetic slightly. The same 38 inches sits at the knee on one woman and below it on another. Taller women with shorter kurtas are the one group who should measure rather than assume, because their margin between the two boundaries is the narrowest.

Length and the two cuts

Length interacts with cut. Our kurta slips and dress slips are both 38 inches, but the kurta slip runs straight with side slits while the dress slip flares A line, so the same length behaves differently in motion. Under a flared dress, the A line keeps its hem swinging with the dress hem, never against it. Under a straight kurta, the straight cut and slits keep the two hems tracking together. Matching cut matters as much as matching length, and the full matching logic is in our guide on what a cotton slip is.

A note from our team in Jaipur. We settled on 38 inches after watching customers wear our pieces, not after a spreadsheet exercise. Indian kurtas have drifted longer over the past decade and dresses run midi or maxi for most of our buyers, so a knee length slip undercuts nearly every hem in the wardrobe while fully covering the backlight zone. One length serving every size from S to 3XL also means the slip you reorder always behaves like the one you know.

Frequently asked questions

What length should a slip be for a kurta?

Knee length, around 38 inches, works under nearly every kurta. It ends above the kurta hem, covers the full thigh zone, and side slits keep it moving with the kurta’s own slits.

Should a slip be longer or shorter than the dress?

Always shorter, by at least two inches. A slip hem below the dress hem is the one visible failure a slip can have. Measure your shortest dress before buying.

What do I wear under a short kurti if slips are too long?

A camisole on top and opaque bottoms below. Short kurtis end where slips begin, so the strategy changes from one layer to two halves.

Do I need a full length slip under an anarkali or maxi?

No. Sheerness reads at the thigh, which a knee length slip covers. Below the knee, extra slip fabric adds catch and warmth without adding useful coverage.

What is the difference between a full slip and a half slip?

A full slip hangs from the shoulders and covers torso to knee. A half slip is a waist down skirt layer. For kurtas and dresses the full slip is the standard, since it also smooths the torso and absorbs sweat.

How do I measure slip length at home?

Shoulder seam to hem with the slip flat. Compare against your shortest garment measured the same way, keeping a two inch margin.

One length, whole wardrobe

Measure your shortest hem once, confirm the two inch margin, and the length question is closed for years. Knee length covers the rest. The complete layering system is in our under layer guide.
