The fastest fix for a sheer kurta is a knee length cotton slip in a skin tone shade. It makes the body of the kurta opaque, keeps the sleeves and yoke as light as the designer intended, and adds no noticeable heat. Four other options exist, and they are ranked below by how well they actually work.
A sheer kurta is not a mistake you made at checkout. Chanderi, kota doria, mul and voile are semi sheer because that is what makes them breathable, and the brands that sell them assume you know the layering step. Many of us were never told. So here are the five real options, in the order we would recommend them, with the honest downside of each.
First, check how sheer it actually is
Do the daylight test before buying anything. Wear the kurta, stand with a window behind you, and look at a mirror across the room. Backlight is the harshest condition the kurta will ever face. If you see the outline of your legs or your innerwear, you need a layer. If you only see a soft glow through the fabric with no outlines, the kurta is wearable as is, and adding a layer would just add heat.
Check three zones separately: the chest, the midriff, and the thighs. Many kurtas are opaque on top because of a double yoke and sheer only below the waist, which changes which fix you need.
The five fixes, ranked
- A cotton kurta slip. The complete fix. A straight cut, knee length slip with side slits covers chest to knee, matches the kurta’s movement, and breathes through the day. Beige under light kurtas, black under dark ones. This is what our slips are built for and it costs 460 rupees. Downside: it is one more garment to own and wash. That is the entire downside.
- A long camisole. Works if only the top half of the kurta is sheer. Camisoles end at the hip, so thighs stay uncovered, which the daylight test will reveal. Pick cotton over synthetic. Good as a partial fix, not a full one. We compare the two properly in our slip vs camisole guide.
- A skin tone bra plus opaque bottoms. If the kurta passed the daylight test below the waist and only the innerwear shows through the top, switching to a seamless skin tone bra often solves it alone. Cheapest fix because you likely own one already. Downside: does nothing for true fabric sheerness.
- Getting the kurta lined by a tailor. A permanent fix that turns a sheer kurta into a self contained garment. Costs 200 to 400 rupees at most local tailors using mul or butter cotton lining. Downside: the kurta becomes warmer forever, the drape stiffens slightly, and you cannot undo it for the days you would rather layer light.
- An inner shorts and tube combination. The improvised route some of us use in a pinch. It works visually but creates lines at every edge, and three small garments trap more heat than one slip. Keep it for emergencies.
For nearly everyone, option one ends the problem. Options two and three are good when the sheerness is partial. Option four suits a kurta you wear constantly. Option five is a hotel room solution.
Match the layer to the kurta colour
Whatever option you pick, the colour rule is the same. Skin tone under light colours, black under dark colours, and never white under white. A white layer under a white kurta creates a bright panel with visible edges, which reads from across a room. This trips up more people than sheerness itself, and we wrote a separate guide on layering white and light outfits because of it.
The festive case: chanderi and kota doria
The two most slip dependent fabrics in Indian wardrobes are chanderi and kota doria, which is why festive kurta sets generate most sheer panic. Both fabrics are loosely woven by design and both look their best when the slip underneath is invisible. Use the kurta cut slip, match the slits, and pick the shade by the kurta’s base colour, not its print. A kota doria dupatta needs nothing underneath, sheerness is the point of a dupatta.
Sizing the layer right
A slip that grips defeats the fix, because tight fabric prints its own edges through the kurta. The slip should skim the body with room to move. Check the size chart, and if you sit between sizes, go up. Slips are non returnable for hygiene reasons at almost every brand including ours, so measure before ordering.
A note from our team in Jaipur. We test every semi sheer fabric we stock against our own voile slips under direct window light before it goes live. The finding that surprises customers most: a kurta plus a thin cotton slip is cooler through a summer day than the same kurta worn alone, because the slip absorbs sweat that would otherwise glue the kurta to your skin. The layer you were avoiding for heat reasons is the layer that manages the heat.
Frequently asked questions
What do you wear under a transparent kurta?
A knee length cotton slip in a skin tone shade for light kurtas or black for dark ones. It makes the body opaque while leaving sleeves and yoke sheer, which is how the kurta was designed to be worn.
How do I make a sheer kurta wearable for office?
A beige kurta slip plus a seamless skin tone bra passes every office lighting condition, including the glass wall meeting room with daylight behind you. Test at home with window backlight first.
Can I wear a sheer kurta without anything under it?
If it passes the daylight test, yes. Stand with a window behind you and check a mirror across the room. No visible outlines means the kurta is opaque enough for daily wear.
Is it better to line a kurta or wear a slip?
A slip is reversible, washable separately, and works across your whole wardrobe. Lining is permanent, makes that one kurta warmer forever, and costs about the same as a slip. We recommend the slip unless the kurta is a daily uniform.
What should I wear under a sheer white kurta specifically?
A beige slip, not white. White under white creates a visible bright panel. Skin tone shades disappear because the eye reads them as your body.
Do sheer sleeves need a layer too?
No. Sleeves and yoke are meant to stay sheer, and no comfortable layer exists for them anyway. Cover the body, let the sleeves breathe.
One layer, problem ended
A sheer kurta needs one decision, not five. The knee length cotton slip in the right shade fixes it completely, costs less than the kurta’s dupatta, and works under everything else you own too. Start with the full guide on what to wear under kurtas and dresses if you want the system.
